Early Music America Fall 2012 - (Page 47)

Berkeley Festival 2012 Continued from page 43 program was unusual in its variety, depth, and beauty and was of special interest to many concertgoers. Another unusual concert was Ansámbl Luython’s “Collegium Rorantistarum: Renaissance Music of the Polish Court,” led by artistic director Vince B. Ho. The first half included solo pieces, a lovely canzona by Adam Jarzêbski, and hymns sung in Polish. The second half consisted of Lwowczyk’s Missa Paschalis, one of the most important sacred choral compositions of the Polish Renaissance. Unlike typical European music of the period, the ensemble performed without sackbuts, bagpipes, crumhorns, or similar instruments, but employed a large string section and a “regal” organ with two pairs of bellows (played by Ho). Piroshkis and kielbasa were served. Early in the week, Frances Blaker (recorders), David Wilson (Baroque violin), Barbara Blaker Krumdieck (Baroque cello), Jonathan Salzedo (harpsichord), and William Simms (theorbo, Baroque guitar) of Ensemble Vermillian performed well-chosen trio and solo sonatas by J.S. Bach and Jean-Marie Leclair. One of the Fringe’s other presenters called it “a smoking performance played to perfection by an ensemble doing what it does best: recasting strong works for recorder and violin.” Les grâces (Jennifer Paulino, Annette Bauer, Rebekah Ahrendt, and Jonathan Rhodes Lee) contributed the West Coast premiere of Jean-Baptiste Stuck dit Battistin’s The Butterfly, and the amateur group Bay Area Baroque Orchestra—joined by professional Baroque musicians from the Bay Area and beyond—was well received by listeners who found its interpretations vibrant and moving. At one point the conductor, Frances Blaker, had the audience sing part of The Art of the Fugue to familiarize them with the theme before the orchestra performed it, then had instrumentalists serve double and triple duty by playing each other’s parts. Other Fringe highlights included a benefit for Eileen Hadidian honoring her Continued on page 57 NEW & RECENT TITLES IN EARLY MUSIC PERFORMANCE AND THE MIDDLE ENGLISH ROMANCE LINDA MARIE ZAERR An examination of if and how medieval romance was performed, uniquely uniting the perspective of a scholar and practitioner.
