The ‘Other’ Glass Upgrade

’ve been making a lot of calls to avionics shop owners over the past few weeks assembling information for the December issue of Avionics News. My research objective was to discover what the best selling products were for 2011. So far, the list has been comprised of the usual suspects – glass displays, new radios, XM weather, cabin entertainment/connectivity systems and the like. One product category that hasn’t been mentioned yet is electronic engine monitoring and display systems. This has surprised me. So, I posed the question to Rick Ochs, president of Spirit Avionics Ltd. “A lot of our customers don’t know much about them,” he explained. “We get pilots who have seen a magazine ad or read a story about the electronic displays, but few have actually seen an all-in-one in action.” Ochs said he has installed one of the new, large all-in-one engine displays in the 182 his company uses
