Rockwell Collins engineers are working on advances in integrated avionics with a new package that builds on existing hardware and comes close to removing the need for the pilot to ever look below the center of the panel. Heads up, eyes forward – that is where you will see changes designed to build on an existing system, the company’s Pro Line 21 familiar to thousands of pilots. In fact, sit in a pilot’s seat on a business jet built in the past decade and odds are good that you’ll be looking at this system – a Pro Line 21 integrated avionics system. Twenty-five business-turbine aircraft models fly with more than 4,000 installed Pro Line 21 systems, with a few hundred more joining the fleet each year. After winning certification in June, Rockwell Collins boasts a new top-of-thestack system, Pro Line Fusion. Since its unveiling in late 2007, no less than 13 original equipment manufacturer Part 25 plane makers embraced the package as the panel of choice for their latest aircraft, including Gulfstream’s new G280 and G650, Learjet’s 85 and Bombardier’s Global 6000. With the exception of the Learjet 85, these platforms have four large 15-inch flat-panel displays, merging synthetic- and enhanced-vision technologies within the system. New as it is, Rockwell Collins already sees a path to improvement for Fusion and, at the same time, a pair of new markets for the futuristic Fusion system. That’s where Part 23 panel providers may want to beware. In October, Rockwell Collins confirmed plans first hinted during EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis. It will expand Fusion into a line tailored for the smaller spaces and lighter-weight demands of Part 23 jet and propjet aircraft – the light end of the business-turbine market. The second tine in Rockwell Collins’ two-pronged approach should assure Fusion 23 a quick success: an aggressive retrofit program already in motion which will allow Pro Line 21 operators to upgrade their stacks to a Fusion package on par with the new-install OEM packages in the works. With 4,000-plus potential Fusion upgrade panels in play, the company has yet again found a way to attract clients from two directions. While remaking Pro Line 21 panels into full-featured Fusion systems for those 4,000 systems flying, the upgrade goes further to give flight crews something Fusion Large originally lacked – a touchscreen. As Rockwell Collins moves forward with Pro Line Fusion, the option of touchcontrol display-screen interfaces becomes available to Fusion and Pro Line 21 operators. Rockwell Collins also is offering Part 23 cockpits another technology upgrade long-available in Part 25 and military aircraft: the Heads-up Guidance System. It is the first time a heads-up-display package has been available at a size and cost compatible with the smaller flight decks of smaller aircraft and includes technology with the first iteration of synthetic vision. Rockwell Collins’ revisions to Fusion fulfills a philosophy of “heads up, eyes forward,” according to Adam Evanschwartz, principal marketing manager, commercial systems.
