JOHN GOODE:

President of MSP Aviation
ohn Goode inherited his entrepreneurial skills from his father, who started his first business at a young age and worked with his mother who owned a candy store in Chicago. The candy store was called Goode’s, which may have led to his last name being pronounced “Goodie,” not “Good.” His father is extremely successful and had a strong influence on his son’s business sense. “We moved around a lot growing up, because my father was climbing the corporate ladder,” Goode said. “That exposure benefited me in later life.” It didn’t take long, though, for Goode to become an entrepreneur in his own right. He bought his first business when he was 18 years old. In fact, it was two businesses – two formal wear franchises in the suburbs of Chicago. He knew something about the business since he had worked for a formal wear store in high school as part of his distributive education courses. “I realized I could make money at this,” he said. He earned his bachelor’s degree from DePaul, majoring in accounting. You might wonder how an 18-year-old boy had money to invest in a business. Goode explained that his father taught him how to invest in the stock market and, by his own description, had “done well.” He had also been in a car accident and received a monetary settlement. But, he had a business partner. “My dad and I went 50-50, and I learned a great deal,” Goode said. “I also learned one big valuable lesson about retail: I didn’t want to stay in that industry.” From there, Goode followed in his father’s footsteps and
