With four partners, Kostlevy owns a 1961 Cessna Skyhawk, which was the year it was introduced. “It has a push-button starter and vacuum pump instead of the 172’s pull-handle and venturies,” he said. It’s typical of the kind of airplanes in which he installs new avionics. His hands are large and work hardened, yet he possesses the fine motor skills needed for avionics’ small parts and tiny fasteners. Like a card player, he deals several hands from a deck of 8.5-by-11-inch paper prints of color digital photos of the panels he’s improved. There’s the Piper Colt he worked on in Clintonville, and the next photo is a page from its logbook: “Disassembled for the ‘Price Is Right’ TV show. Reassembled for flight. Zahn’s Airport, Lindenhurst, LI, NY. Nov. 20, 1963.” In any given month, he does two or three installations, “depending on how you define installation,” he said. Because of the time and travel they often involve, “I try to stay away from big jobs, but a couple of winters ago I built a new panel for a Cessna 180.” On such projects, he subcontracts the wiring harness, “I’m more of a sheet metal guy,” and does as much building, stacking and testing as possible in his shop. Beyond the Cessna 180, in a homebuilt Lancair he replaced steam gauges with Advanced Flight System glass and a Garmin stack, and he’s almost finished upgrading a Navajo with Aspen units, a job that’s required several trips to Sheboygan, south of Green Bay, on Lake Michigan.
