While you can’t control Mother Nature, you can control how you will react to her mayhem by drafting a disaster-recovery plan for your shop.

Yet, if you are one of the 54 percent of people who don’t think a disaster will affect you, according to Red Cross surveys, your local Small Business Administration or local emergency management office has a sobering, geographic-specific list of possibilities, including floods, tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, pandemics, real or imagined terrorist attacks, fires, wildfires, blizzards, power outages, hazardous materials incidents or accidents – vehicular, industrial and otherwise. Consider, too, that a tornado, flood or fire – the most common business disaster, according to the SBA – may affect you but not your competitor two towns away. If, for example, your repair customers can’t work with you, they will find someone else that can. “Risks are not really that complex to determine,” Minzes said. “Look at the realistic risks a business faces, and develop a mitigation plan based on the likelihood and probability of it occurring.” And, this is where the work begins.
