5. Your working space. Consider what you will do if your hangar or front office is out of commission, Childs said. While some of your front-office employees will be able to telecommute or work from a hotel room, the heavy lifting that occurs on your shop floor will have to move somewhere with special facilities, like a runway. Make arrangements now, rather than later, to avoid expensive agreements. Look for other businesses, such as a friendly FBO or maintenance shop at another airport, when you have overflow work. Likewise, test-drive partnerships by sharing office facilities with other small businesses when you’re out and about, Childs said. 6. Your data. Your records are your lifelines, so make sure you back up all of your electronic records daily. This

includes customer lists, orders, inventory, payroll, invoices and bills, Childs said. She uses cloud-based Internet backups, and there are many options available. Schedule automatic updates daily, use redundant update options and verify that you are updating your most current data. Look for key documents in backups to ensure you can find them. Keep copies of important paper forms off-site, such as leases or insurance policies. If you are using voiceover Internet phones, have a backup, such as a landline or cellphone. 7. Your implementation training. The best plan in the world won’t help you if none of your people know how to use it. “Training, drills and exercises are a key part of disaster recovering planning,” Minzes said. “It’s critical that each staff member knows their role and what they

have to do in the event of an emergency.” This will only occur if you have practiced fire evacuations, tornado drills and even business-restoration tabletop exercises. By doing such drills, you will determine what works, what needs finetuning and where you come up short. After all, if your people have concerns and anxieties during exercises, you want to fix those before you are confronted with the actual situation, Childs said. Indeed, if you wait until an actual emergency to determine how to get your business back together, you have put yourself into a situation where you are likely to become another statistic. With some advance planning, you can be part of the solution and confident your business is strong, whatever comes your way. q
