Avionics News February 2012 - 69

The updates just kept coming with the models 205, 210, 212, 214, 412 and 450. You will find some models with tail rotors on the right side of the tail boom, and others with the tail rotor on the opposite side. Some could fire missiles or engage in psychological warfare. The model 212, UH-1H, which has twin engines, entered service in 1970. A presidential model, the VH1N served as Marine One during the 1970s and 1980s. UH-1s have flown millions of hours and been used for transport, troop insertion, troop extraction, battlefield command, fire support, evacuation, armed escort, visual reconnaissance, drug interdiction, search and rescue and presidential transport. In 2009, the Army National Guard officially retired the UH-1 Iroquis after 50 years in the Army and nearly 40 years in the Army Guard. According to the U.S. Army, “more than 15,000 of the aircraft were produced with about half that number having been flown during the Vietnam conflict.” Yet, the aircraft lives on. The Penn College “Huey” still has some of the original avionics and instrumentation installed. These old black boxes are full of tubes, but as various changes were made to the airframe and engine, changes and updates also were made to avionics and instrumentation systems. Sporting four rotor blades and two GE T700-GE-401C engines with 1,800 horsepower each, the “Huey” continues in the Marine Corps as the Bell 450 “Super Huey.” The UH-1Y sports a night-vision-compatible glass cockpit featuring advanced electronic welfare self-protection systems. “The integrated avionics system is dramatically improving the situational awareness abilities of these H-1 aircraft in challenging environments,” said Ike Song, vice president of situational awareness systems at

Northrop Grumman’s navigation systems division. “These operational advantages will be even more apparent now, as the AH-1Z and UH-1Y work together as a team in their first joint deployment.” On the civilian side, the “Huey” continues in the form of the Bell 412 with a dozen variants. It has four rotor blades, a PT6T-3D Twin Pac, and seating for 13 passengers and two crew

direction, category A IFR approach capability, FDC, TCAS, ADS-B, WAAS enabled GPS, ADHRS and WSI weather products. Cobham is not the only manufacturer providing avionics for the Bell 412. In June 2011, Sandel announced Federal Aviation Regulations Part 29 approval for its ST3400H HeliTAWS wire and terrain safety system. Sandel also sells the

members. The 412 features a dual automatic flight control system with an instrument flight rules option for automatic approaches to hover. Cobham’s synthetic vision glass cockpit has been approved since 2009 for single-pilot IFR operation of the Bell 412. Cobham and Arrow Aviation were the first to obtain a supplemental type certificate for the IFR synthetic vision system in a helicopter. The search and rescue unit of North Slope Borough, Alaska, was the first customer to have the electronic flight instrument system installed on a Bell 412. Features of the Cobham EFIS include a four-screen EFIS with synthetic vision, HTAWS, flight management system, predictive flight

SG102-200 AHRS, designed as a solidstate replacement for the Bendix/King KG 102 and to withstand the higher vibration found in rotorcraft. Both of these units would work well with the Sandel primary navigation and attitude displays. In addition to Cobham and Sandel, Becker, Shadin, Rockwell Collins, Honeywell and others are producing state-of-the-art civilian avionics for the venerable 412 airframe. Like other aircraft in our maintenance training fleet, avionics upgrades take time. When the budget allows and the right students have interest, our old UH-1 will begin to look more modern. In the meantime, we’ll keep it running. q
