smart filing agent that only replaces the charts and parts of the file that are new or contain updated information. That makes the whole file a lot smaller and the update much, much faster.” While eliminating the biweekly need to manually update your Jepp book is a major benefit to going with the iPad, Ellerbrock said it is not the only reason pilots are making the switch. “The readability of the e-charts is very much enhanced over the printed versions, especially at night,” he said. “The e-versions are also more flexible. You can use the iPad’s pan and zoom feature to highlight and enlarge any part of the chart. “If a pilot wants to print a paper back-up of a chart, he can print it on a full 8.5-by-11-inch page. That’s quite a bit bigger than the standard 5.5-by-8.5-size printed chart. Most people don’t, but some do.” Another benefit is the size and weight advantage the iPad has over the venerable Jepp chart book. And, while this may not seem like much for the average GA/business pilot, it can be a significant benefit for corporate and airline pilots. “We have seen instances where airlines, for example, are putting in their business cases the savings from back injury claims from pilots,” Ellerbrock said. “They can identify, through medical records, all the costs associated with pilots trying to make an awkward twist to put those big Jepp flight

cases behind a seat and actually wrenching their back. Large airlines say it’s a substantial savings in medical benefits to switch to the EFB. The lower weight also saves on fuel burn.” Of course, while the marriage of the Jepp chart and iPad seems to have been heaven sent, it’s not perfect – well, not yet. “About the only drawback we can find is the lack of annotation capabilities,” Ellerbrock said. “Pilots like to write their own notes on their charts and plates. But, even that capability will come.” OK, one might see one other drawback to going electronic. Pilots won’t need to carry around those cool looking Jepp cases any longer. The bigger the case and the more stickers you have pasted all over it, the more experienced you are, right? But, I have a suggestion for the kind folks at Jeppesen. Redesign the Jepp cases, but instead of having spaces for chart binders, have one for an iPad and insulate the rest of the space for carry-on snacks and drinks. It would sure look sharper than carrying a single-slice pizza box and a 16-ounce fountain drink onto the flight deck. E-CHARTS 2.0 Just like it has throughout the company’s history, the good people at Jeppesen are not resting on their successes. The next generation of e-charts is already being developed.
