Memphis Airport Control Tower Named for Famous Female Aviation Pioneer

hoebe Fairgrave Omlie was once one of the most famous female aviators in America. She began her career in 1920, when she bought a warsurplus Curtiss Jenny, hired a World War I veteran to be her pilot and began doing stunts for the movies. In 1921, she formed her own flying circus, the Fairgrave Fliers, which barnstormed across the Midwest during the summer months, doing shows at county fairs and borrowing farmers’ fallow fields. Her thrill show included dancing on the top wing while the plane did loops and touch-and-gos, hanging by her teeth from the landing strut, and her

own invention, a double parachute jump. In 1922, she married her pilot, Vernon Omlie, just before their second barnstorming summer. Following the warm weather, they drifted south in late summer and landed in Memphis, Tenn. Vernon was eager to make a living from aviation that did not involve daredevil stunting. The Omlies soon teamed together with a group of aviation enthusiasts and established Memphis’ first airport, Armstrong Field. Omlie’s company, Mid-South Airways, was the fixed base operator. The Omlies put on airshows, gave flying lessons, sold and maintained aircraft and provided crop dusting and aerial mapping services.
