Aspen Avionics’ Connected Panel

The aircraft headset helped pilots hear more clearly – and gave uniform hats their distinctive too-many mission-crushed appearance. The thin cord usually trailed from below the pilot’s ear, across the lap or kneeboard to the panel’s headphone jack. It moved only with the pilot’s head. The mic’s cord largely remained out of the way with the mic itself hanging from a special bracket on the panel. Once picked up, however, the cord goes where the pilot’s hand takes it, which could wrap or wedge between levers and trim wheels. With attention, it remained clear of entanglements until replaced on its hanger. The advent of the all-in-one aviation headset eliminated the separate mic cord, since the main headset cord consolidated all the wiring between the two jacks and the headset itself. One set of wires per headset, per person – no big deal to manage. But, with the advent of several new portable devices, some powered by an internal battery able to use ship’s current, pilots entered into a new phase of technological growth. Multiple functions became available in the last decade of the 20th century, and even more arrived in the past decade. A direct-current umbilical cord to keep them all powered throughout the flight became common. With this growth in accessories came connecting-cord complications, which made “foreign entanglement” as meaningful to aviators as “foreign-object damage.” Consider this inventory of cockpit accessories that began invading cockpits in the 1990s:

Portable GPS navigators – often with a wired remote antenna and a power cord. • Active noise-reducing headsets with wired power from somewhere. • Portable satellite weather receivers with antenna and power cables. • Portable collision-avoidance sensors and more power and connector cords. • Portable ADS-B transceivers, one of the newest – and more entanglements. Now, consider some of these appealing devices may be wired together to fulfill or enhance their functions; think of the weather and traffic sensors wired to the portable GPS, or the ADS-B transceiver feeding its own dedicated display or an electronic flight bag, and what do you have? More cords; a lot more cords. Before the advent of EFBs, tech-savvy aviators would invest in some of these sensors to run on a PDA, or personal digital assistants. They were the rage before cellphones took on the same functions in morphing to smartphones. Well, many PDAs offered GPS functionality, weather-data graphics and traffic depiction – when linked to the appropriate sensors. In sampling some of these systems, the maze of networking cables, connection jacks and sensor boxes and all their power
