Safair Tackles Toughest Missions

rom making food drops into Sudan to transporting research equipment and personnel to the Antarctic, to helping with the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Safair tackles the toughest air charter missions in the world. Very few projects fall beyond its reach. In May 2008, the South Africa-based company airlifted five two-ton black rhinos across Africa to Zambia’s North Luangwa National Park. Weeks of preparation went into the flight that started at midnight and ended in the early afternoon when Safair’s massive Lockheed L-100 Hercules (civilian version of the C-130) landed on a dirt airstrip. cialist environment servicing companies and organizations that work in aid and relief, the mining industry, oil spill response and chartering cargo work in areas where traditional cargo companies would not normally operate,” said Dave Andrew, Safair’s managing director. “We fly and operate in areas such as Kandahar, Afghanistan, and we routinely fly into Somalia.” To accomplish hundreds of demanding missions each year, the company operates the world’s largest fleet of commercial Hercules L-100/L-382 aircraft. “With this type of aircraft in our fleet, we can operate into areas where others cannot,” Andrew said. “Our competitive advantage also comes from the fact that we can land these aircraft on unprepared landing strips – a service that other companies simply cannot provide.” Safair’s fleet also includes two 737-300 cargo aircraft, one 737-300QC (Quick Change) and a recently added 737-400 Combi aircraft. The company plans to add more aircraft in the near future. “We are very excited about the 737-400 Combi aircraft,” Andrew said. “It offers potential clients endless opportunities. The
