Approach Fast Stack Extends the Reach of Park Rapids Avionics

aking a deep breath, Tom Hass, the modest, taciturn president of Minnesota’s Park Rapids Avionics, explained why he bought Approach Fast Stack in 2006. The full-service avionics shop he started in 2001 was busy enough at the time, but nearly two decades in the business had taught him about its cyclical rewards. So, “we listened to their sales pitch and figured it would be a good fit with our company,” Hass said. Hass didn’t purposely plan to extend the shop’s brand, but he was open to the opportunity. The owner of a Piper Malibu connected Hass with the owner of Approach Systems, which designed

and built the hub and harness wiring system that simplifies the connection of a wide range of avionics. Besides specifying the hub as part of the Malibu’s new avionics, the mutual friend knew the Provo, Utah, entrepreneur was looking to sell the system because, “he wanted to go do other things,” Hass recalled. With his younger brother Tim as a partner, they negotiated a deal and rebranded the unit as Approach Fast Stack. A single corporate entity, Park Rapids Avionics covers both brands, making for efficient administration and economical overhead. Tim manages AFS’s daily operations and its five
