Mikrotechna Praha Celebrates 85 Years

n 1927, two pilots in the Czechoslovak Army began designing, building and selling aircraft instruments from home. More than eight decades and multiple mergers, owners and name changes later, Mikrotechna Praha is today’s hightech iteration of that quaint, home-based business. Designing and manufacturing altimeters, artificial horizons, airspeed indicators, pitot tubes, pressure gauges, gyros and more, Mikrotechna Praha resides in Prague (pronounced praha), the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. Some 2 million people live in the greater metropolitan area, a thousand-year-old city filled with castles, cathedrals and forts, and a major trading center in the region. As Mikrotechna Praha celebrates 85 years, its achievements and challenges are closely linked with Czechoslovakia’s own turbulent history. The fact that the company survived a Great Depression,

war, Nazi occupation and a Soviet communist coup d’état is a nod to its incredible resilience. Starting Small Although it started small, the business took just 10 years to grow to 400 employees. It mostly made instruments for aircraft used in national defense as well as the German forces that occupied the country. “During the German occupation in 1938, the company, as many airplane producing companies, came under German administration and was involved in the German armaments industry,” said Emil Milev, Mikrotechna’s project and sales manager who has been with the company for seven years. “In 1945, a presidential decree nationalized the company, and it was named National Enterprise – Pal Modřany.”
