nothing more than high-tech thieves. In March, the FBI busted a ring of hackers who stole 60,000 credit card numbers, making off with more than $700,000 in unauthorized charges. So, it’s easy to see why they’re motivated by money, including bank account information, credit cards and any other data they can sell. And, they are sneaky. For example, consider some of the risks of online banking, Weinstein said. Many small businesses check account balances infrequently, typically only when monthly bookkeeping occurs. In the meantime, criminals can hack an account to siphon cash – often as payroll to fake employees – and be long gone before anyone notices. The most sophisticated ones will even cover their tracks by redirecting the account holder to a website that makes it look like the money is safe. Even when businesses bank with such tight security that uses an individual-use PIN by text message for each login, criminals will trick users into allowing their phones to be hacked, too.
