prevention and keeping these things from happening,” Weinstein said, and you have several tactics to make these attacks more difficult. Start by ensuring your desktop software is updated, and in many cases, this can be done automatically. In particular, use current versions of your operating system and programs, plus Adobe Reader, Flash Player and Java, Weinstein said. Likewise, only use current anti-virus and other security products. Replace your 2008 version with at least 2011 to ensure the product detects the most recent kinds of attacks. Do the same with your website’s operating system, Weinstein said, as well as any plug-ins your Web designer incorporated. Ask your website host if it uses industry best-practices to pro-
tect you (StopBadWare offers a seal if they voluntarily comply) and what it will do to correct an infection. If you don’t like the answers, find some you do. While you’re at it, register with Google Webmaster Tools; in the event your website is compromised, you will receive an email notification. More importantly, you will expedite Google’s rescan of the site once you clean it up. Choose passwords that are complicated, pick unique ones for each login and change them often. Don’t spell actual words; they’re too easy to crack. And, don’t save the password to the computer so it automatically logs you in. Malware will find it and take it. Since everyone in your company is a potential vector of infection, each should be schooled in security awareness. Porn sites are no longer the usual
suspects in malware infections. Today, infections can come from anywhere, yet only 43 percent of employees report having this kind of training, according to the NCSA. Finally, use diligence, especially when handling money. Weinstein recommended, if possible, having a sterile computer – one that’s not used for Web browsing or email – to handle online banking and credit card processing. Keep it “ultra protected,” but know that if it’s attached to the network, it may be susceptible by association. If you have any doubts, consult an expert for a system review. After all, this is the cost of doing business. Since the Internet, email and cybercrime aren’t going away, if you don’t protect yourself, you’re inviting the criminals to beat a path to your door. q
