It’s How Rockford’s Avionics Place Does Business

urprise is often the first reaction when a newcomer walks into the 6,550-square-foot hangar, which is home to the Avionics Place on the Chicago/Rockford International Airport. A full-service shop, one expects prosaic examples from Cessna, Beech or Piper, but a North American T-6 or T-28, or jets like the Lockheed T-33? When Courtesy Aircraft, a renowned warbird dealer, is next door, seeing the unexpected shouldn’t be a shock, especially for an avionics business that consistently seizes opportunities as it reveals itself. It starts with the founder, Anthony Polemarkis, who became a private pilot before enrolling in a junior college electronics course in nearby Crystal Lake. One day in 1969, he saw a bulletin board notice that the Elgin Airport Corp. was looking for some avionics help, “so I ran down there,” Polemarkis said. “With my aviation background – being a pilot – they jumped on me.” In 1974, Polemarkis opened Northern Illinois Avionics at Dacy Airport, 30 miles northeast of Rockford, then home to a big Cessna dealer. As the 1980s dawned and general aviation changed, he moved to Beloit, Wis., where he changed the shop’s name to Avionics Place. Looking for a good employee, Polemarkis found David Wright, nearing graduation from Blackhawk Technical College’s avionics program. Without him, Avionics Place would not now exist. Thinking of leaving the business, Polemarkis said, “Dave gave me the energy to stay in it.” In time, they became partners. In 1981, they decided to move again. Looking north and south of Beloit, “we decided there was more aviation here in Rockford.”
