Wright emphasized. Being experimental category, many warbirds now use the TruTrak Flight Systems autopilot, “where we can adjust the gain settings through the face of the instrument.” Test flying their installations and repairs is one of the perks of warbird
work. Wright has flown in most warbirds, from liaison and training aircraft, to bombers and jets. The test flight of an STC’d Century III autopilot in a P-51 was “the funnest ever.” And, the greatest disappointment was the autopilot and full Dzus-mounted Becker Avionics rack the shop installed in an A-4 Skyhawk. “It has only one seat,” Wright said sadly. “We had to take his word that everything worked.” Courtesy Aircraft was the seed for the cottage industry of warbird workers at Rockford. Heritage Aero specializes in warbird maintenance, and during annual inspections Avionics Place fixes the appropriate squawks, Wright said. Across the field, Superior Plane Coating Systems, a full-service paint shop, will research and replicate military markings or touch-up nicks and scratches. Beyond its website, word of mouth is Avionics Place’s primary form of marketing. Serving two markets for decades without interruption, one would expect no less, especially in the small and tight-knit warbird community. “We (exhibited at) Sun ‘n Fun for about 10 years and then got away from it for four of five years, went back for a couple of years, and now we’re away” from it, Polemarkis said. “We’ve exhibited at (EAA AirVenture in) Oshkosh since 1981,” added Wright. From its booth, the shop sells handhelds and used equipment and GA installations. “Oshkosh is ‘local’ to Rockford,” Wright explained, and “one install will cover our expenses.” After hours, they hang out with their other customers at the Courtesy Aircraft compound in the warbird area. Jets seem to be the latest opportunity. Located across the field, Pride Aircraft specializes in L-39 restoration and training, and Avionics Place is installing Garmin glass in a number of them. What lies beyond will likely be a surprise. Opportunities usually do not telegraph their arrival, but past performance shows that Avionics Place will be ready when they appear. q
