on the primary displays. “We certified the Evolution Backup Display last year with a TSO approval – it’s a derivative of our popular Evolution electronic displays and just as capable. One big difference is the ability to install the backup in either a portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal) orientation. That way, engineers have more latitude for installation.” Lyons said that Aspen’s backup display is being reviewed by a number of airframe OEMs as a new-generation standby instrument solution. “We also have some shops that are looking at aftermarket STCs for the
unit,” he said. “One thing to remember is the Evolution Backup Display is not intended to be used with other Aspen Evolution displays. It is designed to be used with glass displays from other manufacturers, such as Garmin, Avidyne or Rockwell Collins. “For pilots flying large format glass, it can be a real emergency if they have to transition to legacy mechanical instruments with much less information than they are used to. For us, the Aspen glass backup mitigates the shock of this transition so to speak. It provides all the same information the pilot expects, just in a more compact format.” Lyons said that Aspen is offering the Evolution Backup Display
in two versions: a basic all-in-one standby instrument that replaces the traditional “six pack,” plus includes a GPS moving map, emergency GPS and backup battery. Aspen also offers a more advanced unit that adds autopilot integration, GPSS, HIS and nav, which is expected with an integrated glass cockpit. Finally, take note: If you’re interested in working on an STC program, Lyons said that Aspen is always looking for good partner shops that would like to pursue an STC project. q
