Getting Started Starting a new business wasn’t easy, especially in 2008, even for aviation veterans and Aero Express owners Jeanne Rau-Flattery and George Bunting. “It had been an idea of our owners for some time,” Sage said. “They had been researching the equipment needed. It was just a matter of finding the right person. When my circumstances changed, the door opened to this endeavor. I was hired as the general manager to run the facility. “We faced several challenges in setting up the lab, including putting together the proper test equipment, calibration management software, and all the necessary paperwork, tools and personnel. “But, once we pushed the green light, we were up and running in a month. We set it up like an avionics shop with similar procedures and quality standards. Within a short period of time, we earned our ISO17025-2005 and ANSI Z540-1-1994 accreditation.

We continue to add new capabilities to meet our customers’ needs.” Sage’s avionics background includes 20 years with Honeywell Bendix-King, working at FAA-certified repair stations and managing an avionics repair and overhaul facility – experience that was incorporated into the calibration lab’s culture. “That is what makes us unique,” Sage said. “We are not just a calibration shop. We also understand the avionics that the test equipment is driving. Therefore, we have a greater knowledge and skills base than most standard calibration facilities. Due to our troubleshooting skills and understanding, we are able to repair many boxes.” Aero Express and Millennium International, also of Lee’s Summit, Mo., signed on as the lab’s first customers. As an FAA-, EASA- and JAA-certified repair station, Millennium requires all equipment to be
