tionists. Most also offer newsletters, posters, webinars and other information resources. While costs for these programs vary, they are generally inexpensive enough that it’s worth a call, especially once your DIY program is already up and running. The Employee Benefits Institute of America said you can experience a 70 percent jump in participation by offering incentives. Those can include prizes for high-mileage walking, cash incentives for employees who drop overall cholesterol or reduced deductibles for employee health insurance, particularly if your insurance provider is on the wellness bandwagon. However, these cash-back incentives may harm chronically ill employees; with higher deductibles, they may actually avoid getting needed care, which raises costs in the long run. You will also need to navigate some legal requirements. Federal laws prohibit you from requiring employees to take medical exams, pairing incentives with disclosing genetic or family histories, penalizing employees for not participating in activities without offering alternatives or even seeing confidential health information.
