Kevin Gould recently completed his fourth sprint triathlon.
evin Gould remembers a near idyllic childhood in Edmonds, Wash., just north of Seattle, where he spent a great deal of time outdoors – fishing, swimming, riding bikes and exploring with his pals. His father was a mechanical engineer who was a facilities manager at a paper company. From him, Gould developed his love for mechanical things. “My father led me to my fascination for machines,” he said. “We would always be fixing our cars or repairing things around the house. That led to an interest in gas-powered model airplanes, motorized bikes and motorcycles. I would buy and fix cars, drive them for a while, then sell them for a profit. I was always involved with mechanical things and had a knack for them.” Toward the end of high school, Gould was considering the Air Force Academy for college, and he began the preliminary application process. It was then he received the first major disappointment of his life. He learned his colorblindness would prevent him from ever being an Air Force pilot. “That was a setback for me,” he recalled. “So instead, I studied business at Washington State University, and then went straight to law school.” He landed his first job in corporate law at a large prestigious firm in Los Angeles. “If you remember the television show LA Law, that was what it was like; except instead of divorce lawyers, we were prim and proper business attorneys,” Gould said. He said he enjoyed the sophisticated environment of the law firm, but found the day-to-day practice of law simply did not spark a passion. His love of working on machines with his
