Digital Audio Leads to
Growth for Becker Avionics

early 60 years ago, Max-Egon Becker started
a small aviation electronics business in BadenBaden, Germany. Today, his namesake company
employs some 200 personnel, operates subsidiaries around
the world, and has delivered more than 1,100 state-of-theart digital audio systems for rotary and fixed-wing aircraft.
The privately held company develops, manufactures and
distributes communications,
navigation, surveillance, and
search and rescue equipment
for airborne and ground
applications. In June, Becker
Avionics Inc. in Florida
delivered its 250th DVCS6100
digital audio system to EADS/
Eurocopter for installation in
a U.S. Army UH-72A Lakota
helicopter, a program Becker’s DVCS was selected for several
years ago.
“Our DVCS (digital voice communication system) is one
of the most successful examples of commercial off-the-shelf
technology used for a military aircraft program … it has
military spec performance at a commercial price,” said Brett
Gardner, director of sales and marketing for Becker Avionics
Inc. “Our DVCS digital audio system product line is so
successful it dominates the majority of our company revenue.”

Still privately owned by the founder’s son, Roland
Becker, and one other shareholder, Becker Avionics
provides equipment to general and corporate aviation, air
traffic control, law enforcement and military organizations
around the world.
“Most of Becker’s business, more than 50 percent,
revolves around special-mission aviation, including
airborne law enforcement, ISR
and EMS segments; followed
by military aviation, and then
general aviation – light sport
aircraft and experimental,”
Gardner said.
International Markets
To support its international
markets, Becker has established
branches around the world, including production and
design subsidiaries in France, Poland and Taiwan.
Most of Becker’s employees reside in Germany at the
company headquarters, located at the Baden Airpark near
Rheinmunster and the Rhine river, in southwest Germany.
“These facilities support our intercom, and Compact
Line and Prime Line avionics, along with air traffic
control and search and rescue products,” Gardner said.
