Gauthier said.
Porta Air handles most repairs in-house, but larger
projects, such as engines and propellers are accomplished
with the help of its carefully chosen industry partners.
“I believe we are within the top 15 companies in aircraft
maintenance in Germany and No. 1 in avionics in northern
Germany,” Gauthier said. “We are doing avionics upgrades
worth up to $200,000.”
Six avionics experts rotate between the company’s
three locations, depending on the projects. In addition to
its highly trained mechanics, Porta Air has examiners and
staff capable of certifying airworthiness documents in
compliance with the European Aviation Safety Agency.
“Our team is a perfect mix of long-time, experienced
technicians as well as young, dynamic experts,” Gauthier
said. “Today, we clearly see a lack of outstanding avionics
experts within general aviation. Therefore, we recruit
young people and develop them ourselves.”

Moving Forward
Founded in 1965 by Hans Kaiser, the then-young
company was one of the key maintenance service centers
for Piper and one of the leading aircraft insurers along
with Allianz. The company rolled out avionics services
in 2007. This year, Porta Air added Garmin and Bendix/
King to its Avidyne and Becker Avionics authorized
dealerships.
“In the last 50 years, there have been different phases
with ups and downs,” Gauthier said. “Within the last
couple of years, we have seen a consolidation within the
MRO market. The smaller entities can no longer meet
all EASA requirements, including investments in new
tools, systems and training. Also, many have no proper
succession plans. I believe we’ll see a maximum of 25
big MROs in Germany in a couple of years.”
