Haines said, “Host a company
event or press conference only
when you have some significant
news, such as a major shift in
the company’s product strategy,
acquisition of a company or
launch of a new line of products.
Discussing the nuances of the new
software version 1.2 versus version
1.1 is not a reason for a press
conference; just send a press release
for that. You’ll wear out your
welcome quickly with the media if
you under-deliver at events.”
McClellan agreed and said
media day events should
be reserved for important
announcements or where there is
something new to actually show
or tour. He added this practical
piece of advice: “Whatever you
do, don’t schedule a media visit
for a Monday or Friday.” In case
it’s not clear why, a Monday or
Friday may be convenient for you
and your company, but it means
the media must give up a weekend
day for travel – not a thoughtful
approach for someone you are
trying to woo.
And finally, take Haines’
word for it: “Nothing turns off a
reporter faster” than a company
trying to leverage advertising in a
publication for editorial coverage.
At quality publications – those
that people actually read and
have credibility – there is a wall
between the advertising staff and
the editorial staff.
“Your whining to an editor that
you run a big advertisement so you
therefore deserve a certain level of

coverage will only cause the editor
to question the integrity of you and
your company,” Haines said. “In
fact, you will actually decrease the
likelihood of coverage.”
