"Based on our experience with our True Blue Power emergency power supply, we felt we could bring to general aviation
the benefits of lithium-battery technology and do it in a safer
package," explained Todd Winter, president and chief executive
officer of True Blue Power.
"That was before the Dreamliner issue, but since we've been
preparing to educate the flying community on why this technology is better, safer ... and in the long run, more cost-effective."
The Nanophosphate lithium-ion technology that powers the
TS835 Emergency Power Supply is the same technology the
company now offers in two main-ship battery packs - the TB44
and TB17. The TB44 was designed and sized for medium- and
large-turbine-powered aircraft, while the TB17 was designed
for light-turbine and piston-powered aircraft.
And the battery technology itself is, according to Winter, only
part of what his company believes will make OEM customers
embrace a battery technology only recently threatened by the
weight of multiple safety concerns.
"It's a better, safer technology - and more environmentally
friendly, too," Winter said at the company's headquarters in
Wichita, Kan.

True Blue Power's Challenge:
Overcome User Concerns
In the Boeing 787 Dreamliner's first year of service, at
least four airframes suffered electrical system problems
stemming from the design of its lithium-ion batteries. While
new airplanes, as we know, often suffer early teething problems, the uncharacteristically high number of incidents -
among them an electrical fire aboard an All Nippon Airways
787, and a similar fire found by maintenance workers on a
landed Japan Airlines 787 at Boston's Logan International
Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a review into the design and manufacture of the Dreamliner and
its electrical system.
Five other incidents involving 787s followed in five days
- mostly traced to problems with the batteries and electrical
systems.
The FAA ordered the entire fleet grounded, a highly
unusual step - the first fleet-wide grounding of an aircraft
model since the FAA grounded the McDonnell Douglas DC10 in June 1979.
According to safety reports, the 787 lithium-ion-chemistry
batteries suffered two major thermal runaways within 52,000
flight hours - far below one-in-10 million flight hours predicted by Boeing.
