TRAILBLAZER: CARLA FLOR Continued from page 59 cising his rights as a general aviation pilot and aircraft owner. Although he could have made the trip by car, he preferred to land his piston twin at LaGuardia. As an AEA member, Penn College has been able to take advantage of donations arranged through the association. A significant portion of the equipment used by Flor were the result of these donations, and Flor is grateful. “The equipment we used at Penn College was very modern and up-to-date,” Flor said. “It definitely helped me in knowing how to use the test boxes we had. One particular test box I use most often is the nav/comm test box for troubleshooting purposes, or for operational checks on CRJ 900s.” According to Flor, she wanted to experience college life. She participated in many college events, includ- ing the inaugural Career Services’ Etiquette Dinner, which gave students a learning opportunity at Le Juene Chef, Penn College’s fine dining facility operated by hospitality students, faculty and staff. “My experience at Penn College is something that will remain in my memory forever,” Flor said in reflection. “It was great. The college gave me the opportunity to get hands-on experience and a great education that I actually use on the field. One may know all kinds of theory, but the way one learns is by doing the work and putting all pieces of the puzzle together.” Learning and working in a male-dominated field can present challenges to any female. So far, Flor has not experienced any problems. “I found that all my classmates were very helpful and involved with the whole group,” Flor said. “Everybody helped everybody.
