Automation and Adapters Make Pitot-Static Tests More
Efficient, but Finding Leaks Still Takes Time

Like the closed systems we depend
on today, gravity fed water from a
reservoir about eight miles away to
nearly 18 miles of pipe in the city’s
network. Later promoted to France’s
chief director of water and pavement in the 1850s, Darcy had more
time for hydraulic research, which
included improving the pitot tube.
Henry Bazins assisted and published
the results after Darcy’s death.
Darcy corrected four main weak-
nesses that “revolutionized Pitot’s
instrument and brought it into largescale use,” Brown wrote. Building
on an equation created by Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647), the
Italian physicist and mathematician
who invented the barometer, Darcy
calibrated the instrument’s readings.
This led to a design modification
that eliminated the operator-supplied
vacuum that charged the system,
further increasing accuracy. Other
modifications extended the pitot
tube beyond the boundary layer and
changed the diameter of the tubing
to provide more stable readings.
In other papers, Darcy experimented with tip designs and static
port locations; one design collocated
them in a single probe. In another
paper, he discussed calibration tests
and noted that a leak in the system
produces an erroneous reading.
