While helping build the business
into a successful enterprise, Thiebeau
earned an associate degree in business
administration at Iowa Lakes Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Still, aviation remained on her mind,
so she began applying for scholarships. While preparing to submit a
scholarship application to the AEA
Educational Foundation, she checked
out Spartan College of Aeronautics
and Technology. Located in Tulsa,
Okla., Spartan has provided professional pilot training and aviation
mechanic training since 1928. The
college offers diploma, associate and
bachelor’s degree programs. In addition, Spartan provides flight training
for the U.S. Air Force.
“I thought it would be really great
to have an opportunity to go to school
at a nationally recognized aviation college,” Thiebeau said.
Not only did Thiebeau earn an AEA
scholarship, she also won an Association for Women in Aviation Maintenance (AWAM) scholarship. She has
not taken advantage of this opportunity
yet, but when she does, she expects to
learn much more about Boeing 737s.
Initially, she didn’t think she would
earn a scholarship, and while attending
the 2011 Women in Aviation, International Conference, she joked about
moving to Tulsa. As it turned out,
she indeed won the Leon Harris/Les
Nichols Memorial Scholarship from
the AEA Educational Foundation to
attend Spartan.

dent who plans to pursue an associate
degree in applied science in avionics at
Spartan. The award covers all tuition
expenses for eight quarters or until
the recipient completes an associate
degree, whichever comes first.
“It felt like winning the lottery when
the AEA called to tell me that I won the
scholarship,” Thiebeau said. “I would
have never been able to afford funding
a school like that on my own.”
Her then fiancé, now husband,
agreed to move to Tulsa to support her
dreams and goals. Thiebeau tied the
knot during Spartan’s summer break
in June 2012, and the couple is now
expecting a child.
Thiebeau noticed Spartan had
some advantages as an AEA member
college. She got involved in the AEA
student chapter club and served as vice
president. The club toured businesses,
listened to guest speakers and worked
to raise money for six students to travel
to the AEA Regional Meeting in Dallas. The students represented Spartan

well by earning several NCATT certifications and endorsements.
According to Thiebeau, she had a
“great and memorable experience at
Spartan College.” Typically, school
work was quite easy for her, but she
found Spartan’s coursework quite challenging.
“It did not come easy,” she said. Due
to the challenge, she studied much more
than she had in the past. “When I got
to the end, it was so rewarding. There
are a lot of great instructors at Spartan
who really care about the students. They
want us to succeed and make time to
help, even if they don’t have time. The
staff and administration were great.
They were very friendly and interactive with the students, popping into the
classrooms every now and then.
“Dr. (Frank) Pendergrass was
always good about popping into the
classrooms. He often was so sneaky
that you wouldn’t hear him come in,
but he had been standing there for
several minutes. I am honored to have
known Dr. Pendergrass, and we all
miss him dearly at Spartan after his
death in October.”
Although other females started the
avionics program with her, Thiebeau
was the only one who finished in a
class of 22. She found both peers and
instructors to be very respectful, and
they treated her no differently than
the men. Thanks to her prior experience working in the male-dominated
automotive industry, she was not
uncomfortable in the male-dominated
aviation school.
