or any avionics shop – large or small – routine altimeter system and
transponder tests are a staple of doing business. While these tests are
common, the applicable regulations, procedures and equipment have
changed quite a bit in the past few years. Based on interviews with front-line
avionics technicians, managers and manufacturers, this article provides an
update on requirements and practical advice on how to meet those requirements
with maximum customer satisfaction and a minimum of surprises.
The requirement for periodic altimeter system testing every 24 months
is established by Federal Aviation Regulation 91.411 for aircraft flown on
instrument flight rules. Light aircraft flown only under visual flight rules,
including most primary trainers, have no requirement for periodic testing;
however, if those aircraft are equipped with transponders, FAR 91.413 requires
they be tested every 24 months. For aircraft flown above flight level 290, where
reduced vertical separation minimum rules apply, FAR 91 Appendix G specifies
