ost pilots fly their entire lives enjoying the speed and convenience of general aviation
with zero moments stressed by a system failure or an in-flight emergency. And then
there’s the rest of the population; somewhere, somehow, something not of their doing
prevents the use of their favorite trip description – uneventful.
Rare though they are, those moments do occur, imprinting on pilots memories of moments
quite eventful to them. Most pilots need just one in-flight emergency to
pique their interest in avoiding repeating it or any similar event.
Two situations, in particular, seem to inspire avoidance
strategies in pilots; fortunately, both risks can be largely
ameliorated by redundancy solutions installable by most
avionics shops.
More than one pilot has sought and installed a standby
suction system in the aftermath of an all-too-common vacuum pump failure. Likewise, visions of redundancy regularly infect pilots who suffered an electrical-system failure
– particularly a total loss of electrical power, though losing
the generating source is typically just as powerful an incentive.
Lose the suction system and the power ends for the two analog
gyro instruments most common and most used in aviation; lose electrical
generation and the battery takes over as a standby source – but only for as long
as it takes for the third gyro, lights, radios and autopilots to drain power.
Redundancy and standby power take on the sheen of more than gold – but platinum if
either system fails while flying in instrument meteorological conditions. Equal in stress to losing either system in IMC: losing one or, in particular, both – at night.
