Domestic Avionics Requirements are Well Known,
but What if Your Customer Wants to Fly his Airplane Overseas?

magine you’ve just finished installing a bunch of
equipment in a customer’s plane. It has a spiffy new
WAAS-enabled GPS navigator with moving map, a
built-in Blu-ray DVD player for the passengers and stereo
headphone jacks at each seat. To fit all the new stuff, you
removed a functioning ADF and its antennas but left behind a 121.5 MHz emergency locator transmitter. Despite
your best efforts, the customer declined to mount a Mode
S transponder in anticipation of ADS-B requirements or
add a 406 MHz ELT. The owner also opted to retain some
legacy equipment, including an older 720-channel nav/
comm. As the customer’s acceptance flight concludes,
he casually mentions plans to fly to Europe, Russia and
Africa in a few months, sort of a bucket-list thing.
At this point you have a couple of choices. One is to

wish him good luck, knowing the work you did will serve
him well. Your second choice? Ask him if he’s researched
whether or not his new and existing equipment is legal
to operate in the countries he plans to visit, at the altitudes he plans to fly and in the terminal airspace he plans
to use. If his answer is no, you have two more choices.
The first one is to shake his hand, make sure he has your
email address for his trip updates and pictures, and wish
him luck again. The second choice is to roll his airplane
back into your hangar and get on the phone to order new
equipment for his trip.
When considering equipping for international flight operations, there usually are more questions than answers,
at least at first. The quickest, simplest answer to whether
or not existing avionics will be adequate is, “It depends.”
