During the last decade, the latest
revolution began. This revolution is
bringing avionics into the networked
age. Aircell and Iridium provided relatively inexpensive satellite communication. Near-real-time weather information, including radar, started beaming
from SiriusXM into cockpits for display
on one of those fancy new integrated
avionics suites. Corporate and larger
aircraft started “phoning home” with all
sorts of maintenance-related information, which technicians began reading
on their smartphones.
The combination of technologies
responsible for databases, displays and
improved navigation have allowed
extended ground proximity warning
systems to evolve into terrain awareness
systems, or TAWS. Although large aircraft use Class A TAWS, the much more
affordable Class B TAWS is making
small-aircraft operations safer.
The Federal Aviation Administration
used the same combination of technologies in the Capstone Project, which
started in Alaska at the turn of the century. By the end of 2006, Capstone had
proven itself, and the FAA decided to
integrate the Alaskan Capstone Program
into the national automatic dependent
surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) program.
In the space of 50 years, and within
approximately the same frequency allocation, our industry has progressed from
vibrator-driven tube-type 90 channel
coms to 2,280 channel coms, which are
merely one part of a fully integrated avionics suite. Perhaps the day is near when
technicians will once again, “shudder
when a transistor device enters the
shop.” They will feel a chill, wondering
how one could find his or her way along
the airways using nothing but transistors
amplifying analog information to be displayed with needles and communicating
by using voice. q
