FAA Updates Part 135
Maintenance Requirements
In issuing change 263 to Federal Aviation
Administration Order 8900.1, volume 2, chapter
4, section 8, the FAA has provided new guidance
to FAA inspectors tasked with evaluating a Part
135 operator’s/applicant’s maintenance requirements.
This section provides information, policy and
guidance on aircraft maintenance requirements
to operate under Title 14 of the Code of Federal
Regulations (14 CFR) Part 135 with aircraft type
certificated for a passenger seating configuration, excluding any pilot seat, of nine seats or
less. Inspectors should use this section with other
applicable sections in volume 2, chapter 4.
In May, the FAA revised 14 CFR Part 25 to
include a new requirement for installed systems
and equipment for use by the flight crew.

This rule amends design requirements in the
airworthiness standards for transport-category airplanes to minimize the occurrence of design-related flight crew errors. The new design requirements will enable a flight crew member to detect
and manage his or her errors when the errors
occur. Adopting this rule will eliminate regulatory
differences between the airworthiness standards
of the U.S. and those of the European Aviation
Safety Agency without affecting current industry
design practices. This new rule becomes effective
July 2, 2013.
This section applies to installed systems and
equipment intended for flight crew members’
use in operating the airplane from their normally
seated positions on the flight deck. The applicant
must show these systems and installed equipment,
individually and in combination with other such
systems and equipment, are designed so that qualified flight crew members trained in their use can
safely perform all of the tasks associated with the
systems’ and equipment’s intended functions.
Anyone installing avionics in Part 25 aircraft
should review § 25.1302, installed systems and
equipment for use by the flight crew.
