generational is never easy. But the transition from
the baby boomers to the millennial generation will
certainly not involve the general aviation trauma of the
last changing of the guard. Still, economic Darwinism
prevails, and efficiently run businesses that adapt to the
changes will carry avionics well into the 21st century.
International outlook
Compared to the U.S., the general aviation markets in
Canada and the South Pacific are comparatively small,
and they serve a different mix of aircraft. Nearly equal
numbers of U.S. shops maintain piston and turboprop
aircraft, with roughly three-quarters maintaining jets
and two-thirds serving helicopters. These percentages
are similar in Canada, except for helicopters, which
are maintained by 83 percent of shops. In the South

Pacific, the mix is different: 100 percent for piston and
helicopters, with two-thirds working on turboprops and
one-third on jets.
Even though they serve a different mix of aircraft
on nearly opposite sides of the globe, their shop rates
are close, not accounting for the exchange difference
between Canadian and Australian dollars. Their labor
rates are also similar, but the percentage of shops giving
salary increases is another story: 75 percent of Canadian
shops will give a 6.5-percent pay increase, while
employees at two-thirds of South Pacific shops will see
a 3.75-percent increase this year. Interestingly, survey
respondents in both were evenly divided when it came to
business growth. q
