the younger engineers. The work
is quite varied as our clients are
from the airlines, general aviation
and emergency services - fixedand rotary-wing.

Five Rings Aerospace
recently joined the
AEA. Why?
As the avionics manager of
Five Rings Aerospace, I wanted
the company to be part of a
professional industry body. Also
being an AEA member allows
the company to participate at
industry events with our clients.

How is aviation in
Australia different
from the U.S. or
elsewhere in the
world?
I lived and worked in
Washington state and Virginia as
an avionics engineer for three
years. The engineering and
maintenance practices are no
different here in Australia when
compared to the U.S. We, at
times, are a little isolated when
it comes to parts availability.
The time zone difference with
technical support means a

person's day must be well planned.
Consequently, we "improvise,
adapt and overcome," as Clint
Eastwood might say.

What is the corporate
culture at Five Rings
Aerospace?
We have a vibrant and energetic
culture; the company has a good
mix of youth and experience and
a terrific enthusiasm for providing
support to our clients. After
much hard work from the senior
leadership team, the company
recently gained Part 21 design
approval authority from the
Singapore CAAS to complement
our existing CASA (Australia)
design authority.

When you are not
working, what are
you doing?
I have a private pilot's license.
This helps me with my design and
approval work. However, I don't
fly as much I would like. I enjoy
travelling and spending time with
my three almost-adult children. I
moved to Melbourne recently and
am enjoying what the city offers in
terms of things to see and do.

Tell me about
your family.
I am not currently married;
however, I am engaged and am
planning a honeymoon at the same
place and location as the AEA
Europe Regional Meeting - just
joking. But the AEA South Pacific
Regional Meeting location could be
considered in Tahiti!

Do you have any
hobbies?
Years ago, I restored a car, and
I built a KR2 homebuilt airplane.
Now I'm considering building
a boat. I recently bought a
reasonably old house, and it will
keep me busy dealing with its
current and future issues.

What do you see
for the future?
There are some interesting
and exciting times ahead for
the industry in terms of UAVs,
surveillance systems and IFE. q
