I

t's no news that when it comes to their overall safety
record, helicopters, in general, and special-missions
helicopters, in particular, have had a pretty rough
time during the past few years.
In fact, it got so bad a few years ago, that the global
helicopter industry stepped back and collectively said,
"Enough is enough." And that began a consolidated effort to find ways through a combination of improved
training, safety management system implementation and
advanced technological applications to help bring helicopter accident statistics back down to earth.
"We looked at some industry studies on helicopter
safety that had been done over the past five or six years,"
stated Dan Toy, principal marketing manager for Rockwell Collins Airborne Solutions. "One of the things we
saw in the study is that situational awareness has been a
key gap for helicopter operators. Many of the accidents
occurred in degraded visual environments like fog, low

clouds, rain, darkness - the pilot loses his situational
awareness cues and ends up running into something.
"Of course there are a number of 'good weather' accidents where the pilot just loses sight or wasn't aware
there was a tower or cable or other obstacle near the aircraft. But by and large, the majority can be attributed in
some way to degraded visibility."
Toy explained that after analyzing the data, the team at
Rockwell Collins started looking at ways available technologies could be implemented to provide pilots with
greater situational awareness no matter what the operational environment.
"We decided to put together a family of offerings that
would offer a good synergy between the products and
could be brought to market in some of our newer cockpit
