n a warm, partly sunny day in November, Chad
Hembree of Centerville, Mo., felt particularly
emotional. Barely three weeks earlier, the former
Army specialist had married his longtime fiancée, but
there was more on his mind. Riding alongside some 500
other motorcyclists in the St. Louis Veterans Day parade,
Hembree felt thankful to be alive.
Three years earlier, the then 19-year-old soldier
survived five days of brutal fighting with the Taliban on a
mountainside in Afghanistan. Of the 40 men in 1st Platoon,
Alpha Company, in Operation Bulldog Bite, seven died and
30 more were wounded - only Hembree and 12 others were
capable of walking off the mountain.
In tribute of his heroic service, Jet Aviation St. Louis
modified a Harley-Davidson Street Bob, transforming it
into a glossy black rolling salute to veterans everywhere.
Among the visual tributes, a screaming eagle flanks each
side, a United States ghost flag winds from the front fender
through the tank, ending on the rear fender, dog tags of
fallen brothers drape across the fuel tank, and a photograph
of Hembree's surviving Army unit embellishes the custom
electronics cover.

Bite, Hembree was chosen the recipient of the HarleyDavidson through a lengthy selection process conducted by
Operation Homefront and the Wounded Warrior Project in
cooperation with Jet Aviation St. Louis. He requested that
the motorcycle honor his comrades who died in action.
Late Nights, Exacting Details
Some 30 technicians worked late nights, weekends,
days off, even at 3:30 in the morning, volunteering their
time to modify the motorcycle for Hembree. The project,
dubbed Operation Hog at Jet Aviation St. Louis, brought

together many of the disciplines that help modify aircraft
for the service center's own customers, including design,
engineering, avionics, electrical, sheet metal, upholstery,
maintenance, planning and scheduling, and management.
Starting with preliminary ideas in March 2013, Jet
Aviation's build team worked for seven months on the
customized motorcycle's design and modification.
"Fourteen individuals had direct design input, each
with an equal voice in the choices we made," said Charlie
Wittman, senior manager of programs for Jet Aviation St.
Louis. "As a project manager, do you know what it's like to
get 14 people to agree on anything?"
Creating a customized tail light LED assembly and air
breather represented the two most exacting and difficult
challenges during the modification process. It took
tremendous effort as well as trial and error to make the tail
light assembly and air breather compliant with the form,
