Dual Garmin G600 Flat Panel
Display System, along with
several other upgrades.

Brian Wilson, director of avionics for Banyan Air Service
in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., echoed Peavley's sentiment. "It has
definitely put a lot more pressure on the shop today," Wilson
said. "You just can't give a blanket answer when a customer
asks about adding glass - you have to know what's available
for each type of aircraft today.
"We get calls all the time from operators wanting to put
the (Garmin) G1000 in their airplane. The problem is that
it's not certified on every aircraft. You can love it to death,
but you're still not going to be able to install it in very many
airplanes today."
As we all well know, there is no perfect panel. Success
depends on a combination of what the individual pilot/
owner is trying to accomplish and the type of flying they
typically do.
"As a pilot, my thoughts are with the customer's needs
first," explained Bob Jacobson, owner of Custom Avionics
in Bartow, Fla. "I don't try and sell him avionics, I start with
asking what their typical mission is. What type of flying do
they routinely do with that airplane? One guy is never going
into hard weather, and the next is in it every day."
All three of our avionics experts said that before you
begin to talk hardware, you need to have a thorough understanding of how this particular aircraft is operated. It's
a seemingly simple step that often gets lost in the aircraft
owner's enthusiasm for their new panel.
"I get customers come in or call, and they have a budget

and a dream," Jacobson said. "I want to help them realize
their dream, but I also want them to still be a happy, satisfied customer a year from now. If I sell them whatever they
want without making sure it fits their needs, chances are
they won't be saying nice things about me later.
"To me, as a pilot, I think if you fly a lot of IFR, then
there are two things you really need today: a moving map/
GPS and a good autopilot. Autopilots are very often overlooked when pilots think of an avionics upgrade. They may
be replacing perfectly good radios and ignoring a critical
piece of equipment that isn't working like it should."
Must play well with others
Working or not, knowing whether you are going to be
keeping the aircraft's current autopilot, as well as what other
avionics are currently in the panel, is a good place to start
when you begin sketching out the customer's ideal upgrade
path.
"If any shop owner doesn't ask 'what's in the panel now?'
as one of his first questions, then he's setting himself up for
trouble," Wilson said. "I don't know anyone who can plan
