A Tale of Two
Conventions
C
harles Dickens wrote in his historical novel, "A
Tale of Two Cities," about two men who look similar but, in fact, are very different. Oddly enough,
I found myself amazed at the two separate events taking
place last March in Nashville: one was a very successful industry event at the 57th annual Aircraft Electronics
Association International Convention & Trade Show,
and the other was the convention's farewell reception,
which has become an annual social event.
As I moved from table to table at the farewell
reception, visiting with members from as near as St.
Louis to as far away as Melbourne, Australia, and
South Africa, along with a few Canucks thrown in the
middle for adventure, I was reminded just how social
the AEA really is.
The conversations on the convention's last night
weren't about radios and instruments, or even the regulators; it was about family, friends, travels and adventures.
As truly professional as the annual convention is - nearly
90 hours of technical training from more than 20 different companies; dozens of new products; and hundreds of
exhibits - it still retains a social aspect. It was a tale of
two conventions.

In addition to several hours of technical instruction, the
AEA played host to the traditional regulatory Rise and
Shine session on Thursday morning. We were privileged
to have two Federal Aviation Administration presenters
this year; one from the Rotorcraft Directorate and the
second from the FAA headquarters.
We will continue to train and educate on these
pages. We will continue to challenge the
authorities, and, perhaps most important of all,
we will continue to promote your professionalism .
Beyond the normal Directorate update, Andy Shaw
presented some information that should be helpful to
all attendees. In his recent policy activities update, he
highlighted a project that we have been working on
jointly with the Rotorcraft Directorate: NORSEE, or
non-required safety-enhancing equipment.
So just what is NORSEE? Similar to the "non-essential"
term (and philosophy) used in Part 23 aircraft, NORSEE
applies to equipment not required by airworthiness rules
