facilities directory, flight planning and filing, active
navigation, backup attitude indication, and even realtime traffic and near-real-time weather data.
Some portable EFBs can even communicate wirelessly with panel-mounted cockpit avionics, such as the
BendixKing KSN 770 all-in-one navigator-and-MFD -
thanks to the Aspen Avionics Connected Cockpit system.
The implications are truly amazing - but the drive
seems nearly universal.
Exceeding initial expectations
Electronic flight bags provide aviators of all stripes
with the entirety of their documentation, their collections of charts, the totality of their approach plates, the
sum of the SIDs (standard instrument departures) and
STARs (standard terminal arrival routes) they use.
In exchange for surrendering their heavy, unwieldy
chart bags, for decades the mark of a professional pilot,
aviators now tote a pound or two of an EFB - and most
often the EFB is little more than an off-the-shelf tablet
computer loaded with software appropriate to the job.

But the revolution has changed far more than the chart
providers' printing bills and the load flight crews lug.
Thanks to this latest in a long line of electronics and
software revolutions in aviation, pilots now may even
file their flight plans - after briefing the weather and
consulting with the operators, passengers or appointment obligations. And the flight crew member accomplished these pre-flight tasks with a little use of a touchscreen interface on the tablet computer serving as the
EFB.
There seems to be few limits on what operators and
aircraft owners want to see EFBs do in their flying.
"From a market standpoint, we have seen a continued
interest from OEMs (original equipment manufacturers)
and operators to establish a paperless cockpit in terms of
aircraft documentation, electronic tech logs, and flight
operation with charting and weather applications," explained Jean-Marie Bégis of Canada's Esterline CMC
Electronics. "The interest for use of tablets in the cockpit has helped reaffirm the need for EFBs in the cockpit,
but also raised interesting implementation challenges."
