addressing members during the
convention's official opening
along since last year's event in Las Vegas.
"Let's focus ahead, and let's look forward," Derks told
attendees, while asking if they're feeding their customers
that same, sad country song about conditions in the industry. "There are many positive signs for a market recovery
in 2014 and beyond," she added.
Using recent numbers defining the general aviation
market, Derks pointed out that for the first time in six
years, business jet deliveries increased from the previous year.
"In 2013, total general aviation billings increased by 24
percent," she said. "And the inventory of used aircraft -
always a sign of demand - is dropping even as prices are
rising. Activity numbers for turbine-powered aircraft also
are up, in the U.S., Canada and Europe."
One conclusion from these numbers, which were supplied by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association
and the Federal Aviation Administration, might be this: If
you can hold your own in a flat industry, you should be
able to thrive in one experiencing modest growth.
More proof came when Derks also announced on the
show's opening day the results from the association's annual industry survey. The AEA's 2013 Year-end Avionics
Market Report is the second consecutive annual collection
of sales and market data the association has assembled.
After adjusting 2012 numbers - which were announced in
Las Vegas - the AEA recorded a 6.9 percent growth rate
in total sales in 2013. In other words, "2013 year-end total
worldwide business and general aviation avionics sales
amounted to $2,429,298,684.50," the association said,
more than $2.4 billion.
