ferences and similarities between antenna mounting systems on light aircraft,
business jets, transport category aircraft
and military aircraft. Technicians must
be familiar with antenna installation,
bonding, tuning and troubleshooting. At
the very least, technicians should be able
to differentiate between VOR, DME,
marker, GPS and ADF antennas. It
wouldn't hurt for technicians to review
a few antenna specification sheets.
Those preparing for the DNS endorsement should understand the theory
behind GPS, VOR, DME, ADF and ILS.
Not only should the technician understand how to operate the equipment,
but also be able to use or draw block
diagrams of the systems. There is some
overlap between the knowledge required
for the DNS and the ANS, and there also
is some knowledge overlap between the
RCS and the DNS.
In preparation for the ANS endorsement, technicians should start by reviewing basic gyroscopic flight instruments
and the wet compass. Those prepared
for the exam will be able to describe
compass systems, flight management
systems, AHRS, ADHRS, air data, IRS
and INS. Furthermore, those studying
for the ANS endorsement should be
able to explain the concept of deduced
reckoning, ANS integration with other
systems, and how various air data and
IRS systems can be combined.
Coming online in the near future, the
Installation and Integration Management
endorsement will focus on project
administration. To be prepared for the
test, a person should examine the processes involved in an installation project
from aircraft arrival to aircraft departure.
Those studying for this endorsement
will find knowledge on project planning to be very helpful. Review the

costs involved in a typical installation.
Furthermore, knowledge of how to
develop time tables is helpful.
Most technicians will find knowledge of the rules regarding alterations
to be helpful, including the necessary
paperwork. Those taking the test will
need to have a basic knowledge of the
documents used by the aviation industry,
including advisory circulars, installation
manuals, type certificates, and repair
and parts manuals.
Three of the Aircraft Electronics
Association's online training modules
are helpful in preparing for this endorsement. Not only will these modules prepare you for the endorsement, but each
comes with an AEA certificate to those
passing the test. These modules, all
presented by Ric Peri, AEA vice president of government and industry affairs,
include flight manual supplements,
instructions for continued airworthiness
and architecture of an alteration.
According to NCATT's Rick
Hestilow, this is the first of a series
involving avionics installation and integration. Within the next few years, technicians should expect up to two more
endorsements in the area.
The best way to prepare for the OCS
endorsement is to take a look at a
transport category aircraft maintenance
manual, along with a review of Federal
Aviation Regulations regarding flight
data and voice recorders. Those interested in earning the OCS endorsement
should review passenger entertainment
systems, multiplexing and intercom systems used on transport category aircraft.
For the endorsements, not including
the OCS, Avotek published Avionics:
Beyond the AET. This book begins
with a review of basic material from
the AET. The beginning chapters
also give coverage to other important
subjects not found in the AET standard. Those include decibels, FETs
