business jet aircraft.

"We have the internal ability to perform vacuum hot
bonded repairs," he said. "Structural composite construction
is really taking off in the business aviation industry, and we
want to be prepared for any customer request. Our goal is to
have the entire staff complete a hybrid program of computerbased and hands-on training within the next 18 months."
Always open to new ways to grow his business, Davis
began investigating the rotary-wing market after being asked
by a helicopter operator to perform periodic and on-call
maintenance for his company's operations.
"We sourced airframe familiarization training that suited
our needs perfectly and within our budget," Davis said.
"Now we'll be able to do the work. To be frank, the cost of
training is something that can't really be passed on to the
customer. We have to be very careful with ever-shrinking
margins. We also have to accept that the better trained our
staff is, the better equipped we are to serve the customer
and the more satisfied our employees feel. We all feel more
valuable as technicians to the organization when we see
investments made in us, myself included."

Going Paperless
Airtech is working closely with Cincinnati-based Clifton
Labs to develop a custom paperless work order system that
performs seamlessly across virtually all hardware platforms.
"One of our initiatives last year was to find a way to
streamline the recordkeeping process," he said. "After
consulting with our CHDO/PMI (certificate-holding district
office/principal maintenance inspector) on the electronic
recordkeeping requirements, we were able to find a software
development firm willing to build us a ground-up custom
software solution that is simple, reliable and fast."
The company is beta testing the work order, parts
ordering and purchase order modules now with plans
to implement additional back-end modules, such as
timekeeping and attendance, inventory control and other
features later this year.
"We are very excited about its simplicity and ease of
learning curve," Davis said. "The fact that it will run on any
