Understanding accredited
versus compliant
In 2013, the company completed its ISO 17025
accreditation. As an accredited laboratory, MidSouth Calibration's processes and systems comply
with stringent industry standards. A third-party
inspector performs audits to ensure adherence.
Should there be any findings, the lab must correct
the issue and take preventative action to address
its root cause. A follow-up audit checks continued
compliance.
"I would like our customers and potential
customers to understand the difference between an
accredited laboratory and a compliant laboratory,"
Riegler said. "The compliant lab does not have a
third-party auditor come in to audit their processes
and procedures. They have 'proclaimed' themselves
compliant. While some of these companies are truly
a well-documented company, most are not.
"I would encourage anyone seeking calibration
services to verify compliance by asking for their
accreditation certificate. I would suggest you go
one step further and verify their accreditation
status on the registrar's site. If they are listed on
the site as active, then they are accredited."
The lab's gage block comparator provides high-precision testing and
measuring of gage blocks, which are used for measuring in shops.
Shortening lead-times
Today's customers have shifted priorities, valuing
fast lead-times over price, according to Riegler. MidSouth Calibration strives to offer the best of both.
"Our concept is simple - provide a realistic
quote for price and delivery, then do it," said
Riegler, who considers five days the longest time
a customer should wait for their calibration. "We
are not always successful at delivering on time
due to a variety of issues or needed repairs, but
we communicate the issues with the customer
immediately."
A dedicated team of technicians along with the
ability to ship overnight up until 10:30 p.m. with
FedEx makes it possible.
"Since April 2013, we've seen our business
increase 85 percent by employing this simple
concept," Riegler said. q
This capacitance standard helps Mid-South Calibration's technicians test,
compare, and calibrate capacitance values for electrical and electronic
components and products. Capacitance is a measure of the energy storage
ability of a capacitor.
