whatsoever. This is not quite true. Once your studies
are complete for a day or a week, what will you do for
fun? A good college provides other activities to enjoy;
find out what students do in their off time.
What is the community like? Colleges do not
operate in a vacuum. They are part of a larger
community. Explore the town. You will be spending a
considerable amount of time in that town; it should be
a nice place to live.
Are you getting what you pay for? I have taught
at colleges at both ends of the cost scale - more
expensive is not necessarily better. Moreover,
expensive institutions may be more affordable than
you think. Visit the financial aid office; there are many
ways to pay for college. Financial aid officers have
extensive knowledge and are trained to help you. At
any institution, you should see the tuition and fees
reflected in the facilities where you will be taking
classes. This money should be going to you in the form

of equipment, laboratories and classrooms. Look to see
if you will be getting your money's worth.
It wasn't too long after dinosaurs roamed the Earth
when I was shopping for a college. The personal
computer was merely a gleam in the eye of Steve Jobs.
The Internet wasn't even a word yet. As a result, I had
trouble finding many schools to choose. As I recall,
I found four; one didn't know it had a program, and
two others were geographically far away. My choice
did not have an airport facility, but it did have a good
reputation among the companies where I wanted to
work.
By visiting the AEA website, you will find many
schools in the membership directory. Use online
searches to narrow your choices, and then pay a visit to
the top contenders. Regarding your career, this is one
of the most important decisions you will ever make.
