Close to home, Coastal Helicopters supports the
helicopter fleets of a variety of government agencies such
as Florida Fish and Wildlife and the Florida Forest Service.
"We're a small company, but it's amazing how many
aircraft we can service at one time in-house," Odom said.
Merging function, aesthetics
Customers come from all over the region to Coastal
Helicopters to have Odom work on their aircraft's avionics.
"I can't even imagine how many systems Sue has
installed over the years," Selby said. "She has made a
real name for herself among customers. We have a lot of
customers who just won't go anywhere else for avionics.
They would rather have her do it knowing it will be done
correctly and work correctly."
In addition to her 20-plus years of technical knowledge
behind the panel, Odom has developed a talent for ensuring
the finished setup is both user-friendly and aesthetically
pleasing.
"So much of law enforcement aircraft is utilitarian,"
Odom said. "Sometimes they want a system located in a
place that just doesn't make sense. I'll say, 'Really? That's
not going to be user friendly. It will function better and look
better over there.'"

Odom, a 500-hour pilot, understands the systems from
a pilot's point of view. She learned to fly at age 35.
"I learned to fly in a biwing, 300-horsepower, highperformance Stearman," Odom said. "They set me in
there with a couple of pillows behind me. I soloed at 17
hours. I have a lot of hours under my belt, but not as a
pilot. I'm up in a helicopter every other day test flying
radios and other systems. I fly all the time, just not at the
controls. I'm usually the one upside down in the aircraft
trying to figure out why something isn't working."
Back in the shop, Odom enjoys the camaraderie
and rapport she shares with the technicians on the
maintenance side.
"I work with a really good group of guys," said Odom,
who credits much of her training to being on the job
and working side-by-side with skilled technicians. "The
owners are wonderful. I love the employees. Most are
long-term. I'm a newbie at 19 years. We have one good
gentleman who has worked here for 36 years. I think
another one has worked for Coastal Helicopters for 32
years. They have tremendous knowledge and experience.
"I learned a lot when I worked in the electrical
testing laboratory at United Technologies. I had to earn
a lot of certifications and complete training classes
on different types of equipment. I worked for a repair
station in Alabama, and I've taken AEA training courses.
But mostly, I've racked up a lot of hours behind that
wrench." q
