"Early on, he saw an opportunity with LCD technology. It
lent itself very well to the aviation environment because of
its light weight and low power consumption. In those early
days, LCDs had horrible viewing angles. John invented a
way to make them articulate, to move around and rotate to
improve visibility."
In the late 1990s, the company brought its experience to
the automotive and high-speed rail industries.
"In 1998, when we presented our concept for rear seat
entertainment to General Motors, the assistant brand
manager at the time for Oldsmobile said, 'I have to have
this. This is the thing we've been looking for to entertain
kids,'" Cook said. "It just took off. We initially thought
we would build 1,500 units a year but, within two years,
we were building 40,000 a year. That was just General
Motors; add in Mercedes Benz, Land Rover and Toyota. We
expanded to more than 100,500 square feet. We had mass
production lines running."
Certification requirements in the automotive and highspeed rail industries proved just as rigorous as aviation.

"Whether it's designing products for aircraft or
automobiles or high-speed rail, they all have to withstand
very extreme environments," Cook said. "Aviation has
DO-160 testing, which is very similar to the automotive
industry's APQP certification process. We have to test
temperature, humidity, vibration and EMI. All of those
tests are very similar across automotive and aviation.
"A number of aviation companies right now are even
starting to adopt some of the automotive processes for
their product development. I'm working on a bid right
now with an aviation OEM customer that asks us to meet
the APQP requirements. APQP is a very strict process
that ensures products meet the design intent, installation
intent and quality, and that the certification testing has
been completed. A lot of design work has to be done to
ensure everything fits properly. We have been extremely
successful at that. We are on every Gulfstream aircraft that
goes out the door."
