Avionics Design Services finds sudden success

hen Robert Gow began providing engineering services as a Transport Canada delegated airworthiness
representative nearly 20 years ago, he never expected
to be in such high demand.
"There was such an over demand for certification folks," said
Gow, who founded Avionics Design Services in Midland, Ontario. "We just got sucked in by all the work that was out there."
Gow started working out of his
home - no office, just a briefcase
and a small table in the corner of
his bedroom. It had taken him three
years to complete the training and
certification process to become a
DAR, an equivalent to the FAA's
designated engineering representative. A Transport Canada
employee had suggested he pursue the opportunity.
"One of our early projects sent me to Norway to do a UNS
certification on the Super Pumas that were being brought back to
the Hibernia oil field," said Gow, whose company now totals 15
employees, three of whom are designated engineers. "We also
earned large contracts to provide overflow engineering for the
Global Express completion center in Montreal. That pulled our
company forward a lot. It led to more employees and a larger
space."

type certificates. It also helps manufacturers complete TSO applications and approvals. While Avionics Design Services primarily
handles Canadian-registered aircraft, it also can collaborate with
the FAA and EASA when needed.
The vast majority of the company's projects come from
the military, the Department of National Defense, airlines and
modification centers working on business jets. Gow's team also
creates and sells its own STC kits and
engineering data.
"We have about 30 projects open
right now," Gow said. "The iPad
Class 2 flight bag for the Dash 8 is
a big one for us, and so is the dual
UNS-1Lw FMS for the ATR-42and 72-series regional airliner. We have an AML-STC for the
Garmin 430/530, which we had before Garmin. We sold tons of
copies of that at about $500 a copy. At one time, that was a very
important product for us."
Gow brings a variety of perspectives to his job, from troubleshooting to engineering and analysis to flying. A 1,000-hour,
instrument and multiengine-rated pilot, Gow is working on his
commercial license. He also owns and operates a twin-engine
Piper Seneca II.
"I started as a technician," Gow said. "I worked for a number
of years running a repair overhaul calibration shop for IFR
test equipment. I got involved in doing the system design and
