industry, what has surprised him? He said he had
not realized how tightly structured the maintenance
was, noting that everything is done according to the
book. "When I got into the business, I focused on
selling fuel; however, the growth opportunity is on the
maintenance side," Macon said.
Macon wants to provide owners of single-engine
aircraft and light twins the same level of service that
the owners of corporate jets receive. "If someone owns
an airplane that cost a half-million dollars, they don't
want to deal with a mechanic who reminds them of
Fred at the corner gas station," he said. "It should be
a Mercedes type experience with great attention to
detail."
Six months after acquiring his FBO, Macon was
flying to the NBAA Convention on Southwest Airlines
and read the company's core values in the in-flight
magazine: have fun, help each other, and have a heart
for service. "That sums up my philosophy, and I
thought 'why recreate core values when Southwest's
are so good?' I drill these three values into all our
employees," he said.
As for the future, with the acquisition of Ozark
Air, Macon's dance card is full for the next year. In
addition, he is installing new software to help manage
the entire business. "That's a big undertaking," he
said. "After this year, I could see us expanding Ideal
Aviation to other airports."
Like all good CEOs, Macon makes sure that credit
is given to his staff. "We have grown from seven
employees to 33 right now," he said. "They are a
fun group to lead, and they are the ones who make it
happen." q
